Program

From Tours, capital of the castles, with its wooden houses of the 15th century, you will go west on the banks of the Cher. The exhilarating colors and the beauty of the gardens of the Château de Villandry will plunge you into the heart of the 16th century. Following the direction of the current of the Indre, you will arrive on Chinon and its 12th-century fortress, which will welcome you for this stage.

From Saumur castle, you advance through the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park. This territory has six PDOs (Protected Designation of Origin) and offers tastings in the freshness of troglodyte cellars and mushroom farms. This circuit takes you on the tracks of Ronsard, Rabelais, and Balzac. The valley has inspired many artists. It will not take you long to understand why. Maybe, you too will find new inspiration here. On the banks of the Cher, Indre, Vienne, and Loire, discover the wildest French rivers.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tours

Arrival is on your own and you check in to your hotel. You have an orientation with Abicyclette's guide today. You take the time to visit the cathedral or the guinguette, a bar on the bank of the river with a lively atmosphere.

Day 2: Tours - Azay-le-Rideau, 35 kilometers / 22 miles / 100 meters elevation / leisure

On the Cher riverbanks, you head west to discover the exhilaration of colors and beauty of the gardens of the Villandry castle. You are in the heart of the 16th century. You then leave the Loire riverbanks and head south. Riding through vineyards and the forest, you reach Azay-le-Rideau, on the Indre riverbanks, another of the Loire’s tributary.

Note: You can ride for a few more kilometers (51 kilometers / 32 miles / 145 meters elevation / fit)

Day 3: Azay-le-Rideau - Chinon, 36 kilometers / 22 miles / 110 meters elevation / leisure

Following the Indre river, you reach the Loire river. Full of surprises, this day arouses your curiosity. Along the path, let it guide you to a castle, a dovecot, a picturesque manor or old watermills, a curious farm, or old town. As you uncover the secrets of the Loire Valley, you reach the Royal Fortress of Chinon.

Day 4: Chinon - Saumur, 35 kilometers / 22 miles / 200 meters elevation / easy

The Vienne river, running through the village of Chinon, guides you to Candes-Saint-Martin, where it flows into the Loire. Labeled most beautiful villages in France, Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau are dazzling. The Touraine tuffeau offers luminous constructions. At the end of the day, you visit the Montsoreau Castle and the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud before reaching Saumur by the Loire riverbanks. A discovery of the city is a must! The Loire, an impetuous and wild river, grows a bit more with every kilometer. You ride through ancient remains and typical old hamlets to the Trélazé slate quarries, another local resource. As you enter the heart of the city, you experience the old Angers with its castle, Adam’s home, and its incredible cathedral.

You end the stay after breakfast in Angers. The opportunity for one last stroll in the city’s streets and the castle halls is open to visitors. Location

A part of UNESCO’s World Heritage, the Loire Valley, France is a living cultural landscape. With a great river, a fertile land, and temperate climate, it is a privileged place. Its geography, history, and natural sites make the Loire Valley an obvious choice for a cycling holiday! Castles, vineyards, rivers, as well as typical and preserved architecture, offer a variety of interests of a rare density.

From the Cher to the Loire-Atlantique, the Loire river runs through a long valley, offering great cultural diversity. From Nevers in the center of France to the estuary in Saint-Brévin-les-Pins, the inhabitants still have a strong connection with the longest river in France, each with local specificities. The river formed various landscapes, sometimes uphill, sometimes digging cavities, where long ago men found shelter before building homes. You might have the opportunity to sleep in a troglodyte bedroom after a day’s ride.

Roads and bike paths in the Loire Valley

Created in 1995, the “Loire à vélo” is an 800 kilometers cycling route composed of small roads and greenways. If most of the network is on small roads, facilities and dedicated bike paths grow a bit more each year and help keep you away from traffic. Common to the Eurovelo 6 which links the Atlantic to the Black Sea, the “Loire à vélo” is one of the most popular and accessible bike routes.

The low height difference is a real asset and first time cycling travelers often choose it as their starting experience. The network of cycling routes, greenways, and a large number of villages with hotels and bed and breakfast make it a great destination for families.

The Loire Valley is much more than just a cycling route! All around the river, many roads, and greenways take you to castles, vineyards, and other attractions of the Loire’s rich heritage.
