These combined cycling and yoga retreats are aimed specifically at couples or friends where the emphasis for the weekend may be different for each member of the party. Whether you want to enjoy some time in the saddle exploring the stunning Alpine scenery, or simply relax at the chalet with a good book, a massage and some yoga, this retreat offers you the chance to be as active or as restful as you wish. If you are not a fan of cycling outdoors, there is a non-cyclist option in this retreat as well!
Chalet APASSION is a luxury chalet located a short distance away from the medieval village of Samoëns. The chalet offers five spacious double bedrooms, each individually styled with an en-suite, as well as private access to either a balcony or terrace. All rooms can be tailored as doubles or twins.
In this retreat, you will have the opportunity to participate in a daily guided cycle with Geert, APASSION's hugely experienced local cycle guide, join a morning and afternoon yoga session on the terrace with our yoga coach, Tess (afternoon session only for the cyclists) and enjoy one complimentary on-site massage.
In addition, the chalet offers both a large sauna on the ground floor and a six-man hot tub on the terrace to help you unwind, relax any aching muscles, and enjoy the stunning surroundings. Non-cyclists can spend some relaxing time at the chalet, take a wander down to the beautiful medieval village of Samoëns or participate in one of the many activities available in the valley, including hiking, horse-riding or parapenting.
For those that wish to participate in the cycling offered during the weekend, then APASSION proposes the following itinerary which can be adapted depending on the ability of the group.
After your transfer from Geneva, unpack your gear, collect your bike (or set-up your bike if you’ve brought your own), enjoy a light lunch, and then meet-up with your cycle guide, Geert.
With your guide, taking the road out of Samoëns in the direction of Sixt fer à Cheval, you will ultimately run out of road as you approach the stunningly beautiful Cirque du fer à Cheval, part of the Sixt-Passy National Reserve. After a short break for a coffee and to admire the views you’ll head back along the same route into Samoëns before returning to the chalet, a total of around 30 kilometers. Now you are ready and warmed-up for the weekend!
Before dinner, you’ll get to spend time with your guide for the retreat where you’ll learn more about the rides planned, the dos and don’ts of cycling the Alpine roads and get the opportunity to share your aspirations for the weekend to ensure you get the best out of your time.
From Samoëns you’ll head west along the Giffre Valley to Viuz en Sallaz before tackling the relatively gentle ascent up to Plaine-Joux via Bogève (1249 meters - an ascent of 850 meters, 5.4 kilometers at 6.25%) where you’ll stop for coffee at a local restaurant.
Enjoy the magnificent views of the Mont Blanc Massif as you descend into the Vallée Verte to Saint-Jeoire via Onnion. There will be the option to be collected at this point by minibus or to continue the cycle back to the chalet by way of Taninges and the Giffre Valley.
Departing Samoëns the route begins with the Côte de Châtillon-sur-Cluses (741m, 2km @ 4%) before descending down to Cluses. From Cluses the route climbs up the Col de Romme (1297m, an ascent of 815m, 9.3km @ 8.8%), where you’ll then descend through forest to Le Reposoir some 365m below. Le Reposoir is the start of your ascent of one of the most famous sections of the Tour de France, the technically challenging Col de la Colombière (1613m, ascent of 631m, 7.5km @ 8.6%). From the Col descend back down to Cluses before heading over the Côte de Châtillon-sur-Cluses (741m, 6.1km) to Samoëns.
After leaving the chalet for an initial warm-up ride along the gentle roads of the Giffre Valley the real fun begins with the climb up to the Col de Joux Plane (1690 meters - ascent of 990 meters, 11.6 kilometers at 8.6%). You’ll wonder how Pantini achieved the climb in just 33 minutes when he broke the resolve of Lance Armstong in the 2000 Tour de France.
Once at the top you will stop for lunch where you can admire the views of Mont Blanc and the Grand Massif. You then have the option to either retrace your steps and descend back down to the village of Samoëns or to continue with your cycle guide into the town of Morzine on the other side of the col. From Morzine, you will return to the chalet via Les Gets (1165 meters - 280 meters ascent, 5 kilometers at 3.5%) and Taninges before returning to Samoëns via the Giffre Valley.
Today, you have the option to join the cyclists for lunch at the top of the Col de Joux Plane. Before lunch, enjoy a relatively easy walk from the lake at the top of the col to the top of the Bourgeoise where you’ll have a beautiful panorama over all the Massifs of Haute-Savoie. This is a circular walk of around 1.5 hours.
Tess continues to broaden her yoga knowledge to enrich both her personal practice but to bring variety and experience into her teaching.
During the summer months spent in Samoëns, Geert averages 600 kilometers a week with a variety of rides ranging from those over 100 kilometers but with fewer vertical meters to shorter, sub-100 kilometers ride, but with over 4,000 meters of ascent. In winter, Geert heads to Calpe in Spain where he regularly trains with professional riders and participates in the training camp of Trek Segafredo.
Samoëns, located in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, is just a one-hour drive from Geneva. It is an accessible yet unspoiled, authentic and pretty mountain village set in the heart of the Giffre Valley, offering panoramic views of the Mont Blanc range. Samoëns carries the designation of a “ville fleurie” distinguishing it as one of the most beautiful towns in France.
The food served is carefully prepared using fresh ingredients. Special dietary requirements are catered for wherever possible.
You are free to choose whatever you want to do during your stay, whether you plan to relax around the chalet or explore and discover the local area by bike or by foot. The area surrounding Samoens is a bikers and hikers paradise with an array of marked options to suit all ability levels. If you fancy something more adventurous then there are plenty of adrenaline filled activities on offer, from horse riding to Via Ferrata and white water rafting.
The hosts will be happy to assist in booking any activities you wish to participate in during your stay. Alternatively, simply relax on one of the balconies or the expansive terrace with a good book or enjoy your inclusive pampering massage.
Please book your flight to arrive at Geneva Airport (GVA). Transfer from and to the airport is included. APASSION will pick you up from the airport.
Alternatively, you may choose to organize your own transfers either with one of the many hire car or taxi transfer services that operate from the airport.
