Program

Day 1: Arrival day in Lecce

You will have an individual arrival in Lecce. Called the Florence of the South, Lecce is one of the most interesting cities in the region for its baroque architecture, typically of the 17th Century. Do not forget to visit Piazza Duomo and Piazza Sant'Oronzo with its amphitheater. You will stay overnight stay in Lecce.

Day 2: Lecce to Gallipoli

Day two will bring your bike, roadmap delivery, and route description. You will cycle through the beautiful countryside of Salento and after about 25 kilometers, you will reach Galatina. Take time to visit the Mother-Church and the Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria with its 15th Century frescoes.

After a lunch break, maybe with a typical Rustico Leccese, you will ride for a further 25 kilometers towards Gallipoli. Do not miss the chance to spend your evening strolling around the beautiful streets of the old town. You will stay overnight in Gallipoli.

Day 3: Gallipoli to Santa Maria di Leuca

Leaving behind Gallipoli, you will cycle along the Ionian coast headed to Torre San Giovanni. There, the crystal clear sea will tempt you but it is time to get back on your bike! A short detour will take you inland to see the small towns of Ugento and Specchia, one of the most beautiful “Borghi” in Italy.

Then, you will continue your ride for another 35 kilometers, reaching Santa Maria Di Leuca, where the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea meet. It is the southernmost point in Salento, striking the visitor’s eye for its colors and unreal silence. You will stay overnight stay in Santa Maria di Leuca.

Day 4: Santa Maria di Leuca to Otranto

On day four, you will start riding northward along the beautiful coastline of the Adriatic Sea. Crossing the marinas of Tricase Porto and Castro Marina, you will finally get to one of the most amazing cities of Salento, Otranto. If you want, you can have a delicious seafood dinner and take a walk throughout the historic center. Maybe you could also buy some souvenirs from the local little shops. The overnight stay will be in Otranto.

Day 5: Otranto to Lecce

In the morning, if you want, there will be time to visit the city. Otranto is best appreciated for its amazing cathedral where the bones of 813 martyrs are displayed in a glass case behind the altar. Less macabre is the cathedral’s other jaw-dropper, its medieval mosaic floor which rivals the famous early Christian mosaics of Ravenna in its richness and historical significance.

Cycling along the Alimini Lakes, you will finally reach the seaside village of Torre Dell’Orso. Do not miss the opportunity to swim in the suggestive Grotta della Poesia. Before arriving in Lecce, you will meet Acaya, a perfect stop for an authentic Italian espresso or for a drink at sunset in front of the castle. You will stay overnight stay in Lecce.
