The Chateau: Five centuries of history

The Chateau de Saint-Martory is a beautifully restored castle from the Renaissance period. It is located 45 minutes away from Toulouse Int'l Airport, on the banks of the Garonne River, with the Pyrénées mountains at close range. The Chateau is surrounded by historical rural buildings and beautiful woods.

The Chateau's history dates back to the early XVI century when the Montpezat family, lords of Tajan, abandoned their medieval fortress to build the Renaissance chateau on the river banks in order to control the trade on the Garonne River and enjoy life. Shortly after the revolution, the Prince of Berghes married the daughter of the new owner and decided to make the Chateau de Saint-Martory their summer residence.

Architect Ruprich Robert, a fellow of Viollet le Duc, was hired to modernize the building and turned it into a major example of Gothic Revival. The property subsequently changed hands several times before being acquired by the father of the present owner in the early 1990s.

The Chateau itself has seven rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The farmhouse, across the lawn, offers two brand new bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floor. If needed, additional lodging is possible in the village.

Adjacent to the Chateau, the farmhouse and its courtyard provide a top-notch ride staging area. There is a secure bike storage, a workshop area with a shop stand and toolset, a kitchen/prep area for ride food, restrooms, and plenty of space for vehicles.

Contiguous to the Chateau, the pool area is a very peaceful and relaxed place in a spectacular natural setting. The pool was built on a parcel surrounded by an ancient stone wall and the historical greenhouse converted into a poolhouse. On the same parcel the Chateau's orchard offers its fruit from June until October and the BBQ focuses everyone's attention in summer months.

The routes that they will suggest were all designed by their partner Chris Gutowsky, former US national champion and founder of Velosport Vacations, a specialist cycling travel company. The same goes for the logistics of your trip, from special meals to massage services, onsite mechanic etc.

This special program runs from April 1 to May 12 and from October 9 until October 27, 2019. In these months you can expect mild temperatures and sunny weather.

Chris Gutowsky has been in the cycling industry for almost 40 years. When his pro career ended, he decided to focus on travel organization. Today, Velosport Vacations creates and manages customized cycling travel programs for groups.

Velosport Vacations and Chateau de Saint-Martory partnered in 2017 to offer the best possible experience to both Velosport Vacations and the Chateau’s clients. Having cycled extensively around Saint-Martory, Chris Gutowsky will be the key person responsible for suggesting or selecting routes based on the level of your group. He may also be present to ride with you during your stay. All the routes designed by Chris will be available in GPS format for your cycling computer. Two examples of routes:

River valley loop 2: Serious warm up (58 miles, 3650 ft)

A long "double-loop" to the north, this route provides good options for groups of varied fitness. Several long ridge-top roads offer wonderful views. And the midpoint town of Aurignac is a great place for a quick coffee stop, or even lunch on the road.

Core workout: TDF Cols (86 miles, 8130 ft)

After a flat warmup to Saint Girons, the route climbs to and over the isolated Col de la Core. This challenge is soon followed by the shorter but better known Col de Portet Aspet, then a downhill profile finish.

Arrival is on the afternoon of day 1, with a first easy ride to get back in shape and test your equipment. Departure is on day 5 at noon.

Bookings are made on a first come first served basis. Bookings for any given period can only be confirmed when at least 5 cyclists have expressed interest.

The package can be made exclusive for groups of nine persons or more. In such case, the property will be privatized for you and the duration of the stay can be prolonged (e.g., a full week during the Easter Holidays).

Optional bike rental is possible through a local rental service company which has a distributor in nearby Luchon. They offer premium bikes which you may be interested in testing. The bikes will be delivered to the Chateau. For more information regarding bike hire, please send inquiry to Chateau de Saint-Martory.
