USA Cycling Holiday

As you head south from Charleston, you will ride through one of the east coast's largest protected estuarine systems. The ACE Basin (Ashepoo, Combahee, Edisto River System). Here you will enjoy kayaking and walks along raised boardwalk among cypress swamps and wetlands. Continuing south, you will enjoy a beautiful semi-tropic forest and white sand beaches on Hunting, Fripp, and Edisto Islands. You will wrap up your final days of riding, dining, and sightseeing in and around the historic waterfront towns of Beaufort, South Carolina or Savannah, Georgia.

All accommodations starting the night prior to riding are included. You will stay at hotels. Cycle of Life Adventures' choice of accommodations range from modest family-owned inns or bed and breakfasts in the more rural areas to nice hotel chains in the populated areas. Luxurious hotels with nice amenities, as well as inns in the national park system, are booked when available and convenient to the tour locations. Your final tour cost reflects the various lodging decisions.

Lodging and tour rates are based on two persons per room. If you don't mind sharing a room with someone of the same gender, then sign up and say "assign me a roommate". If they do not have someone of the same gender, you may score and get a private room at no extra cost. If you would like to be guaranteed a room to yourself, then register for the single supplement. You will pay extra for that room based on the tour location and local pricing.

  • Day 1: local riding and walking tour of Charleston (16 riding miles - 156' elevation gain)
  • Day 2: Charleston - James Island - Edisto Beach (51 riding miles - 719' elevation gain)
  • Day 3: Edisto Island local cycling - ACE Basin kayaking, birding, and hiking, shuttle to Beaufort
  • Day 4: Beaufort- Lady's Island - Helen's Island - Hunting Island State Park - Fripp Island and back (26 or 52 miles - 347' elevation gain)
  • Day 5: Beaufort - Hilton Head (57.2 miles -335 elevation gain) - Shuttle back to Charleston

This riding tour is very flat and suggested as recreational, but skills riding in light city traffic are necessary.

Van support

The premier Cycle of Life Adventures van with a commercially licensed driver will be available on each tour to carry up to 15 passengers, up to 16 bicycles, and a trailer for luggage and other equipment. The driver will deliver your luggage to your accommodations prior to your arrival and will accompany your group on the road to provide assistance and support, snacks, refreshments, bicycle repair necessities, first aid or a ride for someone who would like to take a break.


Guests are welcome to bring their own bikes or rent one through Cycle of Life Adventures. Their rental fleet consists of Trek Domane 2.3 series aluminum endurance bikes. They feature Trek ISO Speed control technology and sleek geometry for a smooth and stable ride in all conditions. The 2.3 series features a Shimano compact crank, a Shimano 105 drive train, brake system, and Shimano Tiagra cassette.

They provide a rear rack system on your Trek if desired and water bottles and a computer. Please consider bringing your own saddle and pedals that fit your shoes. They keep a fleet of bicycles that range in size from 48 to 60 centimeters. Their inventory also includes several women-specific designs (The Trek "Lexa" SLX) stocked in smaller sizes for petite riders. The cost of a rental bike is 175 USD for a week-long tour. With advanced notice, a special request can be arranged for e-bikes or specific sizes.

E-bikes are new to the fleet in 2018. They are slowly introducing hybrid style electric pedal assist bikes. The Giant "Explore E plus 3". Gearing is a Shimano 1x9 speed, disc brakes, front shock. Price for rental is 375 USD per week or 125 USD per desired day if available. Reservations for e-bikes must be made no less than 3 months in advance to guarantee availability on your tour.

Included excursions

Apart from cycling through several towns, you will have kayaking, birding, and hiking in ACE Basin.


The Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia is known for their fabulous seafood and southern cuisine. This delightful Epicurean tour is sure to please. You will need a good day of riding and activity after an evening dining in Charleston or Beaufort. Charleston alone boasts 600 plus eateries. The area has become a Mecca for culinary graduates. You will be surprised by Elli's version of Frogmore stew, as you dine under the stars on beautiful Edisto Island.

The town of Charleston is known for its historic district, lovely architecture, brick alleys, and civil war sites. Upon your arrival in Charleston, enjoy walking and pedaling past grand mansions, battlegrounds beneath canopies of Live Oaks. The fall season on the South Carolina coast offers mild temperatures, lower humidity, and less traffic and tourism.


An orientation dinner and social hour is included as well as all breakfasts, picnic lunches when riding, and dinner on riding days. Guests are open to ordering as much or as little as they think is necessary. Wonderful appetizers and delectable desserts are always acceptable. Alcoholic beverages will be the financial responsibility of the guest.

All cyclists know the importance of well rounded, healthy meals. With your guides' years of cycling experience, they will provide dining choices you will enjoy, yet still provide the power and nutrition needed for the enormous calorie output from a day of cycling. They will always attempt to find at least one restaurant for fine memorable dining. Coat and tie will never be necessary. Dining will generally be upscale, casual, and comfortable.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Charleston International Airport (CHS). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Cycle of Life Adventures will pick you up from the airport. Airport pick up time is 3 p.m. on March 15. Drop off time is March 20 at 4 p.m. Or meet at the starting hotel where you will leave your car for the week.
