Included excursions

Visit to local chateaux or castle is included in the package.

The Dordogne region of southwest France is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations in the country. Visit this beautiful region of France and discover the chateaux, beautiful medieval towns and villages, unspoiled countryside, and prehistoric caves – just some of the many reasons why the region attracts visitors.

There are many ‘famous sights’ that we associate with the Dordogne, including Lascaux caves, Marqueyssac gardens, medieval Sarlat, castles such as Chateau Castelnaud, and the prehistoric caves in the Vezere Valley

Yet it is the places that you visit outside these ‘hot spots’ that will stay the longest in your memory – the scenery, the peace, the coffee in a small cafe, the picnic next to a stream.

The Dordogne is beautiful in the same way as the Cotswolds or Tuscany are beautiful – the way it simply makes you want to stay forever enjoying the quiet, the countryside, the scenery. Some of the other best-known highlights include the Gouffre de Padirac caves and canoeing the Dordogne, with the most popular towns and villages including Bergerac, Brantome, Excideuil, La Roque-Gageac, Le Bugue, Riberac, and Rocamadour.

This region of the Dordogne is the perfect location for cycling with its varied terrain and rolling hills. With almost traffic-free roads it makes for an enjoyable experience. With a wide variety of climbs and descents, combined with more level routes running along the Dronne river it is ideal for either experienced cyclists or beginners.

Dordogne Cycling is based in the North West of the Dordogne bordering the Charente which takes you into one of Frances Plus Beaux Village: Aubeterre. This ancient village set up high above the river with its 11th-century church, which is the oldest in France, is a perfect place to dine or just wander around the pretty shops. In the opposite direction, there is Brantome. A fortified town that is known as the Venice of the Perigord as it is surrounded by the Dronne river. It is also very pretty with many restaurants, shops, and cafes and the old monastery and church. It is the perfect place to cycle to and stop by the river for a picnic before setting off again.

There are many other activities to enjoy in the area. Kayaking on the River Dronne is available nearby from various points but the best place is from Brantome where you can hire kayaks for short trips around the town taking on the small waterfalls and rapids or for longer trips stopping off on the way for a picnic along the river.

Walking trails are aplenty here with tracks leading directly from the property taking you through woodlands and open countryside, via chateaux, churches, and villages.

Mountain biking is available using the tracks direct from the property with the mountain bikes we have for guests to use. The many tracks are ideal for enthusiasts as there are many uphill and downhill descents.

Visit Grotte de Villars Cave

Grotte de Villars is one of the rare caves open to the public and just 35 minutes away. It is an impressive cave in the north of the Dordogne department near Brantome. It is mostly a natural cave full of stalactites and stalagmites but also has a few small prehistoric drawings.

Visit St Emillion

St Emillion is 1.5 hours away, but well worth the trip. Situated in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region it is steeped in history with cobbled streets and beautiful ancient buildings with many fabulous restaurants to choose from and of course many wine shops to test and buy your favorite tipple.

Lake Jamaye

Lake Jamaye is a large fresh water lake with a beach where you can hire canoes and swim. You can walk around the surrounding woods or have lunch in the two restaurants / cafes on the beach front.
