Itinerary

Day 1: Little Lava Lake

After the meeting, Escape Adventures will shuttle you to your trailhead at Mount Bachelor and start your adventure with a technically challenging ride through forests of ponderosa pines and firs. This singletrack ride will take you past Hosmer Lake as you make your way toward the camp at Lava Lake. Today’s 12-mile ride is just a hint of the awesome riding to come! After you arrive at the camp, you can explore the lake or relax and go for a swim.

  • Total mileage: 12 miles / 19 kilometers
  • Camp: Little Lava Lake
  • Terrain: singletrack (no van support)

Day 2: Little Lava Lake to Little Cultus Lake

After breakfast, you’ll begin your ride to Cultus Lake. This ride is one of Escape Adventures' favorites. It winds through thick forest, across bridges, and over streams. As you pass by Cultus Lake, you will have plenty of opportunities to take a refreshing dip in the cool, clear water. Leaving Cultus Lake, you’ll make your way to Deer Lake and finally to your camp at Little Cultus Lake.

  • Total mileage: 18 miles + 8 (optional) / 29 kilometers + 13 (optional)
  • Camp: Little Cultus Lake
  • Terrain: singletrack and doubletrack (no van support)

Day 3: Cultus and Lemish Lake

After leaving the camp, you will ride doubletrack through a lush pine forest that will take you to a tucked away singletrack loop around Lemish Lake. This trail is semi-technical with fun rolling terrain. You'll return to Little Cultus for lunch and to pack up your camp. After lunch, you’ll shuttle to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The caldera is a collapsed volcano similar to Crater Lake. It features the largest obsidian glass flow in the United States and is home to two magnificent lakes. You will spend your two remaining days here riding and camping.

  • Total mileage: 14 miles / 23 kilometers
  • Camp: Paulina Lake
  • Terrain: singletrack (no van support)

Day 4: Newberry caldera

Your first full day at Newberry begins with a long climb to Paulina Peak. The trail gains 1,500 feet over 3.5 miles but will be worth the many photos you’ll want to take. The summit of Paulina Peak (elevation 7,984 feet) is the highest point on Newberry Volcano and provides an amazing visual introduction to the area. On a clear day, the view of the cascades extends from Mount Adams (in Washington) to Mount Shasta (in California). After the peak, you’ll roll along on some amazing singletrack and meet the van for lunch a little over half way. The rest of the day is spent making your way back to the camp on rolling singletrack.

  • Total mileage: 25 miles / 40 kilometers
  • Camping: Paulina Lake
  • Terrain: Jeep road and singletrack (no van support)

Day 5: Newberry caldera

You’ll wake up this morning to your last delicious guide-prepared breakfast. What will you do without them! The ride begins with the Parallel Trail and continues to the Lost Lake Trail through the Big Obsidian Flow. Only 1,300 years old, the Big Obsidian Flow is the youngest lava flow in Oregon and consists of obsidian (black glass) and pumice. It is a sight unlike any other in Oregon. Your ride ends at the camp where you’ll pack up and shuttle back to Bend.

  • Total Mileage: 12 miles / 19 kilometers
  • Terrain: doubletrack and singletrack (no van support)

You are responsible for the cost of shipping to and from the meeting location. You will be charged for return shipping after the tour. If you are shipping your bike, please write your name, trip, and trip date on the outside of the box and attach this information to your frame. They must receive all shipped bikes no less than four days before your tour.

Bringing your bike on the plane can be quite costly and will require you to assemble your bike in your hotel room before the tour. Most hotels will let you store your bike container for the duration of the tour. Due to space constraints, Escape Adventures cannot take your bike box on the tour van.

Preparing for your mountain tour

For optimal physical preparation, Escape Adventures recommends that you ride at least several hours per week during the month preceding the tour. During the tour, you will be on your bike every day and they can assure you that an unprepared bottom is a sore one! If you can’t ride your bike or don’t own one, take a spin class at your local gym a few times a week. Your level of fitness does affect how much you enjoy your tour. Check your specific itinerary for an idea of your average daily mileage and level of strenuousness - then train appropriately.

The support vehicle and driver becomes your own personal support system, bringing you food and drink, carrying your gear safely through the mountains, and lending a bench for a soft ride at your convenience. Their exclusive fleet is custom-built to go further in the backcountry, so you can see places you never knew existed.
