Wonderful Cycling Holiday in UK

Beyond the coast the land rises to higher ground and the population thins to almost nothing. These are wild glens with a raven dark night sky. This is the place for battles, the Outlaw King, Robert the Bruce and history to be written. It feels like another world as you gain height from the coast, time slows. There are views across to Ireland, the Lake District and the Isle of Man and a quiet filled with the sound of Skylarks and the call of Red Kites. You begin and end in Dumfries, and you can combine it with the Stewartry tour for a wonderful long ride.

During this cycling tour, you will spend your first night at Caledonian Hotel. On your second night, you have the option of staying at Gillbank, Buccleuch and Queensberry Arms Hotel, Brookford B&B, or Kenbridge Hotel. On your third and last night, you will be accommodated at Douglas House B&B.

Program

Day 1: Dumfries to Thornhill

The pedal cycle was invented in 1839 by Kirkpatrick Macmillan in a blacksmiths at Keir Mill near Dumfries. You will visit here and the grave of Macmillan on your ride out along the River Nith valley from your start point in Dumfries. There is also the 12 Apostles Stone on your route and Ellisland Farm, the home of Robert Burns, national poet.

Day 2: Thornhill to Saint John's Town of Dalry, or New Galloway

After a comfortable night in Thornhill, you visit the favourite castle in the area, the stunning Morton Castle. You will pick up the old Edinburgh road through the hills before descending to ride through the grounds of Drumlanrig Castle. Known as "The Pink Palace", it is one of Britain’s grandest castles.

You will also visit Moniaive. Afterwards, you will climb up over the hills to New Galloway. For a small village it has two of the finest cafes in the area and you will stay here for your second night. You can book an extra day here which gives you time to explore Clatteringshaws Loch and the beautiful off-road route, the Raiders Road.

Day 3: Saint John's Town of Dalry, or New Galloway to Castle Douglas

Moving on, you will ride along the banks of Loch Ken to Laurieston, where you will turn left and begin to close the loop. You will ride to Castle Douglas where there are fine cafes and those wanting something stronger, a microbrewery and you spend your final night here in Castle Douglas.

Day 4: Castle Douglas to Dumfries

The following day is as little as 19 miles to ride back to Dumfries. There are longer routes for your final day that can take in the coast and romantic Sweetheart Abbey on the way. You have not biked so very far but seen amazing things in just four days of cycling. You can add another two days and see even more if you wish. The route is as little as 88 miles in total or well over 100 if you wish.
