Puglia features great country estates, Masserie from the 16th and 17th century, many have been refurbished as luxury hotels. Staying in a masseria is a memorable and unique experience. You will spend 2 nights in Matera at Albergo Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita hotel. In Polignano a Mare, you will spend one night at Borgobianco resort which features a fantastic spa in a rural setting. Your next three nights will be spent at Masseria Cervarolo hotel in Ostuni, where you will find a homey charm. Otranto will be your host for the three last nights and you will spend them at Relais Basiliani Resort & Spa.
You will be met at the famous Sexantio hotel and visit the old town on foot. You’ll enjoy a great lunch at Falco Grillaio in the old town and afterwards a visit to the famous “Sassi”, ancient cave dwellings, and Ruperian churches allow you to step back in history. In the afternoon, visit the “cave of the original sin” or wine tasting at Polvanera or Patruno Perniola winery in Gioia del Colle. In addition, you’ll have free time to explore the city at your leisure. You will have dinner in L'Abbondanza Lucana Selezioni Gastronomiche restaurant and you will spend the night in Albergo Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita.
After breakfast, you will cycle out of Matera exploring the unique sceneries of a natural preservation area. You will have dinner in Ristorante Lucanerie.
You will cycle from Matera to Polignano a Mare. After breakfast, you shuttle to Alberobello, the UNESCO world heritage site built entirely of trulli, and ride to Polignano a Mare, on the Adriatic cliffs, hometown of singer Domenico Modugno, where many artisans still work metal, glass and stone artifacts. Lunch at incredible Chichibio in Polignano a Mare, on the Adriatic cliffs. You will have dinner at Borgobianco Resort & Spa in Polignano a Mare and spend the night in the same hotel.
Today, you will cycle from Polignano a Mare to Ostuni. You will have dinner at Osteria del Tempo Perso restaurant and you will spend the night at Masseria Cervarolo hotel in Ostuni.
Today, you will climb back in the saddle and head to Martina Franca and then downhill toward the sea to enjoy the spectacular views of the stunning countryside. You will have dinner at Masseria Cervarolo hotel in Ostuni.
Your journey today will take you to Cisternino and Locorotondo, two picturesque hilltop towns whose Greek influence is apparent in their whitewashed exteriors. You will have dinner at Masseria Boezio in Ostuni.
After breakfast, you will shuttle down to the heel of the boot to Otranto, one of Puglia’s most vibrant towns. Otranto overlooks a pretty harbor on the turquoise Adriatic coast. There are fanciful tales that King Minos was here and St Peter is supposed to have celebrated the first Western Mass here. A more definite historical event is the Sack of Otranto in 1480 when 18,000 Turks led by Ahmet Pasha besieged the town. Today, the only fright you'll get is the summer crush on Otranto's scenic beaches and in its narrow streets. From Otranto, you will drive via winding coastal roads overlooking the sea to charming Castro.
Sip cappuccino on the water and dip your toes in the crystal clear aquamarine waters of the Adriatic. When you reach the tip of the boot, you’ll feast at either Hosteria del Pardo in Santa Maria di Leuca or Grotta del Conte in Castro on fresh, traditional Pugliese cuisine such as mussels, fish, local cheeses, fresh-baked bread, and pasta. After lunch, you’ll tour the centuries-old Castel Di Salve winery that brings together wines produced from four of their vineyards which, though geographically very close, actually fall into four distinct microclimates and soil environments. You’ll have a chance to taste them all! You will have dinner at Relais Basiliani Resort & Spa in Otranto and spend the night in the same hotel.
Today, you will cycle from Otranto to Gallipoli and Nardo. Gallipoli, from the Greek Kallipolis meaning beautiful city, is a fishing village on the coast of southern Puglia. Gallipoli's old town, built on an island now connected to the mainland by a bridge, is picturesque and a nice place to stroll through its maze of alleys. The 17th century Baroque Sant' Agata Cathedral is in the center of the town. You will have lunch at fantastic Puritate, one of the best fish restaurant in Italy, visit an ancient oil mill (Palazzo Granafei) and a winery in Nardo’ where you will enjoy tasting 5 award-winning wines, as well as visiting Nado’s fantastic baroque cathedral.
You will ride down to Santa Maria di Leuca and have lunch at Hosteria del Pardo. Wine tastings at Castel di Salve and perhaps a nice swim at Tricase’s crystal waters. You will have dinner at Lemi restaurant in Tricase.
After breakfast, you will shuttle to Lecce, known as the Florence of the south, for a walk in the historical city Centre. Transfer to Brindisi or Bari airport.
On the simple to use and reliable two-wheeled vehicles you can visit the historic city center of Lecce (restricted traffic area) in 2-3 hours following a knowledgeable and experienced guide. You'll find out the secrets that hide throughout the streets, the alleys, the courts that make Lecce one of the most beautiful cities in south Italy. Starting at the Castle of Charles V, you will continue to the Church of Santa Chiara and the Church of St. Matthew, and then along Via Counts of Lecce and Via Marco Basseo with many old buildings present, you will allow yourselves many opportunities to stop and capture their beauty from the outside.
Then, you will come to Porta Rudiae followed by Via Libertini with the Rosary Church, St. Anne's Church and Church of Santa Teresa, Via Palmieri to Porta Rudiae follow Via Libertini with the Rosary Church, St. Anne's Church and Church of Santa Teresa, Via Palmieri to Porta Napoli, the tour continues in the monumental cemetery where you can see the outside of the Church of San Niccol and Cataldo, Park Belloluogo. Lastly, you will come to the historical center. Here is where you will pass by the Church of Sant'Angelo, the Greek Church, the Basilica of Santa Croce and Piazza Sant'Oronzo. This is your final stop and where the tour comes to an end and you can return your bikes at your starting point the Castle of Charles V.
Starting point of the itinerary is the church of Panetti, in the village of Acquarica del Capo, rich in history and culture, within easy reach of the railway lines travelling to the provincial Southeast, or easily accessible by bus or car. In the surrounding area, you can visit the Masseria Gelsorizzo, settled in a complex with a fortified tower, with its chapel, the underground oil mill (trappito), the dovecote tower, typical of the area, the road surface is flat and in good condition, to allow easy passing ability.
From the Square of Acquarica, you head towards the exit of the village, in the direction of nearby Presicce, another testimony of the history of Salento, rich in ancient aristocratic Palaces, along with baroque architecture scattered at every turn and scents of wild ivy. From the square, only a short distance on your right, the Palazzo Alberti, overlooking the beautiful center, just a few meters away appears the churchyard of St. Andrew and the Votive Column dedicated to the saint. When you continue down the road that will lead you out of the town of Presicce. You are now outside the town.
The environment, at this point, is very diverse and characterized by the typical dry stone walls, by pagghiare, the mess, the farms and canals and the natural vegetation and large expanses of olive trees, and the strong smell of salt from the countryside ' grass and earth reddened by the sun. In this point of the route, you are in the territory of Salve, where you find the Chapel of the Holy Lasi, and a rest area, allow a short rest. A small road will create problems for the descent, but the journey is short and easily explored on foot. Pedaling, you get to Patu, a small town of the territory Leuca, is where you can visit important monuments like the Centopietre.
Here, it is said to have been a family tomb, built in the space in front of the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Castle and the Church matrix. Leaving the small fraction, and by returning back to Gagliano, cross the center, heading towards Salignano, you come to Castrignano del Capo, from Borgo Terra and the Parish: from this point, take the direction for S. Maria di Leuca, the final leg of your journey. In all this you recognize S. Maria di Leuca, resting on one of the most beautiful stretches of water in the Mediterranean and the very tip of a coastline full of nature, colors, overlooking the sea, where you look out from the terraces of the beautiful villas, in full moon nights.
