Unpack once and enjoy your beautiful base for this tour, Le Gue de Ray, a beautiful guest accommodation and the perfect place to explore the Loire Valley on a bike. Accommodation is based on two people sharing a double or twin room

Le Gue de Ray is set in an idyllic Loire Valley location, surrounded by rural France and miles of empty roads crisscrossing the beautiful French countryside! They have a boutique accommodation with a choice of double and twin bedrooms, all with private bathrooms. There is also a two-bedroom suite suitable for three people. There is a large and comfortable living room, breakfast room, evening dining room, and guest kitchen.

Make use of the high-speed internet and the laundry facilities and help yourself to hot drinks or use the honesty bar. Sunbathe by the solar-heated swimming pool or relax those tired muscles in the outdoor spa! There is plenty of secure storage for those who bring their own bikes and a fully equipped bike workshop.


The cycle routes

This is just a selection of their most popular routes! They add new routes all the time, and because they are experts, they can create bespoke routes just for you. So if you want hills (even in the flat Loire Valley), they can find you some. Here are the routes for all levels of cyclists and all styles of cycling and completely unique to LoireLife Cycling!

Loire Valley cycle routes up to 30 kilometers

  • Gizeux – Enjoy Idyllic cycling through a traffic-free countryside and the chance to discover and fall in love with the chateau at Gizeux, a fascinating history and an ongoing project for the ancestral family that welcomes you.
  • Lac du Rillé – Go on a fantastic forest cycling around the nature reserve, with plenty of places for picnics and bird watching. In summer, take a canoe out onto the lake and while away the hours!
  • Chateau du Lathan – Enjoy a "Jardin Remarqable" and another chateau where you are welcomed personally by the owners, tracing their ownership back to a gift to the family from Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • Le Menu Ouvrier – Experience a cycle route designed with one purpose in mind, to get you to and from a lunch destination offering the "Menu Ouvrier." Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere as workers tuck in to the traditional French lunchtime feast.
  • Cave de Pays de Bourgueil – Have a great cycle through traffic-free forest roads and vineyards. Explore the wine museum deep underground amid the Cabernet Franc vineyards of St. Nicholas de Bourgueil and enjoy a fantastic wine tasting of the famous red and rose wines.

Loire Valley cycle routes between 30 kilometers and 60 kilometers

  • Bourgueil – Cycle through dense hunting forests before emerging in the rolling vineyards of Bourgueil. Drop into town for a coffee stop and check out the Benedictine abbey and wine tasting house. If you are there on a Tuesday, then you can take in the lively market as an added bonus.
  • Langeais – This is a medieval town sitting on the banks of the Loire river, with a lively cafe atmosphere and an imposing 11th-century fortress complete with a working drawbridge.
  • Saumur – Take a ride through asparagus fields, apple orchards, and market gardens to arrive on the banks of the Loire just outside majestic Saumur. You will have plenty to see and do as Saumur is the home of the French cavalry, a huge tank museum, the famous "Cadre Noire" riding school, Cremant de Loire sparkling wines, and the Combier liqueur distillery.
  • Chouzé-sur-Loire – Extend your ride from Bourgueil and head on to the riverside port at Chouzé. Enjoy a drink at the bar on the quayside looking out onto a stunning riverside scene before maybe taking in a wine tasting at one of the many vineyards en-route home.

Loire Valley cycle routes for 60 kilometers

  • Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau – Cycle to the heart of Chateaux country and take in two of the most famous, Villandry with its magnificent gardens and Azay, dreamily sitting on a lake.
  • Fontevraud Abbey – Head down to the river and pass the Chateau of Montsoreau before diverting to the Abbey where Richard the Lionheart is buried. Fully restored, the buildings are astounding.
  • Chinon – This is famous for its medieval fortress, now restored and running the length of the town, high above on a precipice. It is built by English kings and famous for its Joan of Arc connections. Enjoy a great ride which takes you across both the Loire and Vienne rivers.
  • Ussé – Visit the chateau that inspired "Sleeping Beauty." Approach from the river and get an unforgettable view.
  • Candes St Martin and Troglodytes – Explore the southern riverbank of the Loire and the villages literally carved out of the local limestone hills. A unique bike trail takes you through one ancient Troglodyte village.
  • Gennes – Follow the dreamy River Authion and then the north bank of The Loire itself to Gennes. Have time for coffee before crossing to the south bank of The Loire and following the Loire a Velo cycle route to Saumur for lunch, one of the most picturesque sections of the whole Loire a Velo route.

End-of-route pickups

All the Loire Valley cycle routes are circular, but if there is a destination you are desperate to see and cannot manage the distance, LoireLife Cycling Holidays offers a pick-up service. They will meet you at an agreed time and bring you and your bike back to base at Le Gue de Ray.

Whatever cycle route you choose, you are guaranteed quiet roads, beautiful scenery, and lots of variety.

Bike info

The standard touring hybrids have either 21 or 24 gears, fixed front forks to keep the weight down, and plenty of headset adjustment so they can make you comfortable. The hybrid bikes come with a handlebar bag or pannier, a rear bike rack, a bottle holder and water bottle, an odometer and map molder, a bike lock, a helmet, a hi-viz vest, as well as an puncture repair equipment.

Bike upgrade

LoireLife Cycling Holidays has a range of touring, hybrid, and road bikes on offer and are happy to fit your saddles or pedals to their bikes to make your riding as comfortable as possible. The basic package includes hire of a hybrid or touring bike. Upgrade to a road bike is 20 EUR per day. They also include helmets, panniers, odometers, map holders, and water bottles in the price.

How to get there

Driving directions from the UK

LoireLife Cycling Holidays is an easy drive from all the channel ports and Eurotunnel. Take the night boat from Portsmouth to Caen, and you can be there by 10:30 a.m. and cycling by 11:00 a.m. Take the Channel Tunnel and they are an easy five-hour drive.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). Charles de Gaulle Airport would be your usual arrival point in France. It is possible to then take a direct high-speed train from the terminal building to the Loire Valley without having to go into Paris first.

Arrival by train

High-Speed Rail (TGV) is the quickest way of traveling within France. The nearest TGV stations are either Tours St-Pierres-des-Corps or Angers St Laud. From either of these stations, you will take a 20-minute connecting service to Saumur station.

Travelling from the UK, the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord is an alternative to flying. From Paris, you would then travel from Paris Montparnasse station to either Tours St-Pierres-des-Corps or Angers St Laud as already described. At Saumur train station, they can arrange for a taxi to bring you to Gue de Ray for approximately 60 EUR one way.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 40% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid 30 days before arrival.
