You will be provided six nights of accommodation. A high quality gite in Villard de Lans is your base during the tour. The base is Gite du Col Vert, a large five-bedroom house with everything that you may need: Wi-Fi, washing machine, dryer, secure garage for servicing and storing you bikes, fully-equipped kitchen, large dining area, garden, and decking where you will be served your breakfast and dinner.

The gite will be adapted specifically to the needs of the cycle tours in terms of set-up of the bedrooms, a stretch or massage room, garage with bike stands and tools, and the provision of meals.

Program

Moucherolle Cycle Tours will provide full technical support during every ride, and they will supply each group with turn-by-turn GPS mapping devices to navigate their chosen route. Moucherolle Cycle Tours have also developed an extensive library of fantastic local routes, and each group can choose the routes that suit them best.

You will ride through the dramatic gorges and cliffs of the Vercors for the first three days, before climbing the famous cols in the Alps during Days 4 and 5 (one-week package). For the long-weekend package, you will also ride a day in the Alps if you want to.

Group size is limited to 10, and the rides are aimed at individuals or groups of road cyclists who enjoy the challenge and social aspect of club rides, Sportives, or riding with friends. There is a wide range of fantastic routes available for you to choose from, varying in length and difficulty.

The support car will be close by throughout your rides, carrying spare parts, drinking water and emergency food supplies as well as a few spare bikes. The support car will be driven by a qualified mechanic and first aider with detailed knowledge of the local area. Any spare clothes can also be carried in the support car for when you need it.

If you break down, they will help you with a roadside repair or provide you with a temporary replacement bike while your bike is being repaired. If you have an accident, you will receive first aid support and any further help that may need to be arranged. If you get lost, the support car will find you and get you back on track.

If you are having a bad day and need a little help in getting home, our support car will be happy to give you a lift. Although we won’t provide lunch during the rides, we will point out the best lunch stops. If you can manage a 50-mile ride with your friends or club at home, you will be fine for the tour.

Each group can select the routes that match their ability and desired challenge, and shortcuts are available on most routes if you happen to have a bad day. Moucherolle Cycle Tours aim to provide a tour that provides a challenge and a great holiday at the same time.

You will need a wide gear range to get you through the long climbs, and it is much better to have a gear in reserve than being one short. As a minimum, a compact chainset and a cassette with a 28T ring are recommended.

Rental bikes

Moucherolle Cycle Tours’ own stock of rental bikes are Giant TCR Advanced 2 carbon bikes with Shimano 105 groupsets (weight approximately 8.0 kilogram). The bikes are set-up with compact double chainsets and a 11-speed cassette including 32T, to provide a range that is equivalent to a traditional triple set-up.

If your size bike is not available, Moucherolle Cycle Tours can source a suitable bike for you through local rental companies.

Things to do (optional)

There are many things to do and explore in the Vercors if you fancy taking a day off or extending your holiday.

Mountain biking

With a vast network of off-road paths through the mountains and the valleys, mountain biking has been hugely popular in the Vercors for decades. From family oriented gentle paths of the Via Vercors network to the technical mountain paths in the Vercors mountain range, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Annual key event is the Velo Vert festival in June.

Walking and hiking

The famous hiking network of the “Les Grandes Traversees du Vercors (GTV)” is literally at your doorstep from Gite du Col Vert, and allows you to navigate your way through the stunning natural beauty of the Vercors regional park, with or without donkey

Climbing and canyoning

There are many official rock-climbing sites to choose from across the Vercors region, and spectacular sites for canyoning in Gorge du Furon, between Villard de Lans and Engins.

Paragliding and hot air ballooning

Paragliding for beginners or the experienced is popular in the mountains near Lans en Vercors. Hot air balloons are often seen in the skies of the Vercors and are a fantastic way to explore the wonderful countryside from above. Annual key event is the estiv’air in October.

Touring

With its famous balcony roads such as Combe Laval, Route de Presles and Gorges de la Bourne, it is no surprise that the Vercors attracts motorists and bikers from across Europe to experience these frightening but beautiful roads carved out of the cliff edges.

Winter activities

Alpine Ski

The Vercors ski resorts are famous with the French but virtually unknown to those outside of France, who tend flock to the mega resorts in the Alps. With resorts in Villard de Lans, Correncon, Meaudre, Autrans, and Lans en Vercors, there are plenty to choose from near Gite du Col Vert.

The resorts in the Vercors are family friendly and not overly commercial, resulting in short queues and plenty of time and space to enjoy skiing at any level. The best time of year is mid-January to mid-March, when snow is plentiful.

X-country ski

The Vercors is the home of many Olympic X-country ski champions, and it is no surprise why. With endless beautifully prepared tracks all over the region, you will be spoiled for choice and never have to ski in the same place twice during your holiday.

Fatbiking

Relatively new to the region and developing very rapidly is fatbiking, mountain biking in the snow with fat, oversized tyres to ensure good traction. An entire network of signposted tracks has been developed, dedicated to this new sport.

Snowkite

A large section of the valley between Autrans and Meaudre has been assigned to this sport which is the equivalent to kite surfing, but on snow.

Hiking

Just like in the summer, walking and hiking is a favorite pass time in the Vercors winter, too. Special tracks for hiking are well signposted to avoid running into skiers or fatbikers during your wonderfully peaceful trek. Several basic huts are positioned high in the mountains where you can stay overnight free of charge without the need to book. Just don your snowshoes and start walking!

Spa treatments

You can have an arrangement with a qualified physiotherapist who can a provide sport massage at base at short notice. The charge for this is 25 EUR per session (approximate 20 minutes).
