Road Cycling Camp in Spain

The six days of riding will focus on improving your winter form and help prepare you for the summer riding ahead. Each day has a specific goal with a carefully managed workload. Polka Dot Cycling's experienced coaching team will be on hand to talk to you about improving your technique on the bike also, so you make the most of your gain in form. There is a choice of routes every day to cater for a wide variety of abilities and you will always be riding with riders of a similar ability to you.

Accommodation

Polka Dot Cycling have secured rooms at a new hotel for 2018 the Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf. They are very excited to be using this hotel as it is away from the main tourist areas in the south and lends itself to lots of new routes. It is located in the South near Golf del Sur and opens up the opportunity for non-riding partners who play golf to also join you on one of these weeks or simply relax in the luxurious surroundings.

The all Inclusive hotel offers luxury accommodation with beautiful sea views and is only a three-minute walk to the beach. The hotel has eight swimming pools, free Wi-Fi, and a fitness center and mini-spa with Turkish baths for an extra charge. The resort includes attractive gardens and guests can enjoy easy access to a 800,000 square meters nature reserve. There are also tennis and volleyball courts. A free shuttle service to Playa de las Americas runs twice a day from the hotel.

Rooms at the all-inclusive San Blas are spacious and feature contemporary design. Each room has a balcony and hydromassage bath. Evening meals will be taken in the main buffet restaurant for the first six nights. The final farewell dinner will be a group dinner at the ala carte restaurant.

This is a beautiful hotel and Polka Dot Cycling are very pleased to be able to offer this for 2018. Alberto Contador has stayed here a few times when training!

Program

What cycling you'll do

Tenerife is a hilly, volcanic island although lush with greenery, and so you will be taking advantage of the opportunity to do lots of climbing and descending at your own pace. Mount Teide goes to 3800 meters and there is a large plateau at 2000 meters. You will be using the routes to this plateau, and Tiede to give your training some edge.

Roller recovery sessions and yoga for cyclists

Each day, there will be a foam roller and stretching recovery session on return from the ride. On Thursday afternoon, there will be a yoga for cyclists session to help improve the recovery process and ensure flexibly after four harder days in the saddle.

One-to-one sessions

A great opportunity to sit down with an experienced coach and discuss your goals for the season and how to achieve them. Polka Dot Cycling can schedule one-to-one sessions with the coaches to help you improve your form and personalize your training plan, if you wish.

They will offer you advice on how to improve and enhance your ability now and also what else you could do to get the most out of your training and from events when you return home.

Are you fit enough?

Tenerife really has no flat roads; this is why the pro riders come here to train. Therefore, every day you will be constantly climbing or descending, you will require a reasonable level of fitness before you come to handle six consecutive days of riding on this terrain. If you have any concerns regarding your health please contact your physician, if you wish to talk to Polka Dot Cycling about this issue, please reach out to them.

If you are struggling to handle the riding here, Polka Dot Cycling will encourage you to make use of the minibus, that is what it is for. They reserve the right to make alterations to the route if they have concerns regarding your health, safety, and fatigue levels. During the week, they are intending for you to build some form, not go home in a heap!

Guides and support

Polka Dot has a high standard for their guides, meaning they must be experienced in the mountains but also approachable for you needs. They have a standard 1:5 guide client ratio which means you will always have someone available to help you; whether with technical help, advice or just an encouraging word.

They have support minibuses out on the road which is fully stocked with carb drink and energy food that will help you keep up your energy and also give you a lift if they need it. You will never be far from someone to look after you.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival day

Today will be when you fly in to Tenerife to begin your challenge. You will be greeted at the airport by one of Polka Dot Cycling's friendly guides to make sure you have everything you need and, also, to hand you over to the driver who will be taking you to the hotel based in San Blas.

To give yourself enough time to get settled in and ready for the following day, your first day of riding, please arrange flights that arrive by 5:30 p.m. at the latest, if possible. Polka Dot Cycling will also have guides available in the hotel too if you require assistance to build your bike or would like any tips or recommendations.

There is no scheduled riding today but Polka Dot Cycling can give you advice if you would like to stretch your legs before you begin tomorrow.

Day 2: Vilaflor

There is a choice of routes as usual today so you can tailor the riding to your winter form. The main focus for the ride is the beautiful 13 kilometers climb from Granadilla to Vilaflor. A great steady introduction to climbing here.

The longer route takes in another climb up to Escalona from San Miguel. So, a good first day to get those legs turning without wrecking you for the week to come. There will be a choice of seminars to attend if you wish when you return to your hotel.

  • Distance: 63 to 84 kilometers
  • Climbing: 1540 to 2070 meters
  • Main climbs: Granadilla 6 kilometers at 3.4%, Vilaflor 13.8 kilometers at 5.1%, Escalona 6.4 kilometers at 6.4%

Day 3: Masca and San Juan

Back by popular demand, for the extended option you will be riding into Masca and returning back via Argyuao. The stunning scenery here helps take the mind off the gradient as you climb out of Masca for the first time! On the way to Sabtiago, you will ride the 12 kilometers climb from Los Gigantes all the way to Santiago.

The standard route takes in the stunning San Juan climb from sea level, 9.8 kilometers at 5.5%, up through the banana plantations of the West coast, and then after a well-earned coffee, the fast run-in from Chio. Or you can decide to take in both, to provide you with a big day on the bike - it’s your choice!

  • Distance: 88 to 127 kilometers
  • Climbing: 1760 to 3050 meters
  • Main climbs: San Juan 9.8 kilometers at 5.5%, Los Gigantes 12 kilometers at 5.6%, Masca 4 kilometers at 10.8%

Day 4: Arico and Fasnia

A lighter day is planned today with the hard ride to come tomorrow. Polka Dot Cycling will also film you both climbing and descending to carry out a video analysis in the seminars later (if you have never seen yourself riding before, it can be a real eye-opener).

After your warm up, there is lots of choice today with the option of the route just out to Arico or going a bit further on in and out along this windy road in and out of barrancos to Fasnia. No big climbs today. By keeping the intensity down, this should freshen those legs up for tomorrow!

  • Distance: 57 to 91 kilometers
  • Climbing: 990 to 1715 meters
  • Main climbs: Lots of short 1-3 kilometers climbs

Day 5: Mount Teide

New routes for this year. You will start by climbing to San Miguel and then you have the option of taking the Fronton route up to Vilaflor, the route Team Sky and many pros train on. It’s the toughest of the three routes up to Vilaflor.

For those wanting an easier route, you can choose to go up via El Roque to Escalona. It is an awesome 38 kilometers climb to 2,200 meters! With the correct pacing, this is quite achievable! You can then choose to return direct to the hotel or via a new route, descending on the recently re-surfaced descent to the West coast and the final run-in from Chio. This is one of those awesome days on the bike where you achieve something significant!

  • Distance: 78 to 120 kilometers
  • Climbing: 2400 to 2900 meters
  • Main climb: Mount Teide 38 kilometers at 6.0%

Day 6: Active recovery ride

You have now completed four hard days of training and it is time to recover and let your form build. After the epic day yesterday, you may not fancy a climb today but you'll have a nice day in store. There are a couple of short climbs and descents on which you will carry out some "active recovery efforts" to encourage those tired legs to freshen up, before heading onto the flat and to the coast at Las Galletas for coffee.

This is a short day and allows you plenty of time to enjoy the hotel and resort facilities and recover well as well as make the most of the yoga session in the afternoon.

  • Climbing: 720 meters
  • Main climbs: Pedro’s Cave 3 kilometers at 2.7%, Pipes’ climb 1.7 kilometers at 5.9%, Belgian’ climb 2.2 kilometers at 5.3%, Costa Silencio 1.5 kilometers at 4.6%

Day 7: San Miguel

Another active recovery day but with a short test to see how those legs feel. You will head out up to San Miguel with a 6 kilometers test, and then track along the East coast for a well-earned coffee. After the stop, you will have a fantastic run in to the hotel, with sweeping bends and a great road surface on quiet back roads.

So back in time to relax for the afternoon before an evening meal together and the chance to re-live the weeks riding with your new friends.

Day 8: Departure day

After a great week’s riding, you'll be transferred back to Tenerife South Airport (TFS) for your return journey home.

Have you ever wondered why most of the pro teams come to Tenerife for their training camps? The roads here are perfect for training, great road surfaces and consistent climbs, and the weather in winter is consistently over 20 degrees Celsius and dry.

Food

There is breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the main restaurant as well as snack services throughout the day. Local alcoholic beverages are included such as beer, wine, and some local spirits. Soft drinks and water are also included. During the rides, there are cycling suitable snacks, fruits, and electrolyte drinks available.

During this cycling camp, you eat like a pro! With the constant use of energy, Polka Dot Cycling knows that the best way for people to be comfortable and keep their energy up; they must eat "little and often". This means no bloating, discomfort and losing energy.

Polka Dot Cycling carries a full range of snacks and energy drinks suitable for cyclists along with fruit, cakes, sweets (like the infamous Haribo), cereal bars, nuts, crisps, and more.

Things to do (optional)

At the bottom of the hotel, there is a small sandy beach. The San Blas area has shops and is connected to the the Golf del sur area, where is an 18 hole golf course here and another one in Amarilla golf, 5 kilometers from the hotel.

The hotel is able to book the off times at a discounted rate. There is also a free shuttle bus from the hotel to the nearby resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas.

Please book your flight to arrive at Tenerife-South Airport (TFS). Please ensure you book flights to arrive before 6 p.m. so there is time to have your evening meal at the hotel and attend the briefing about the week's riding at 8:30 p.m.
