Day 1: Ardrossan to Islay

Today you have three ferries to catch and three bike rides to make before reaching your base for the tour. The meeting point is Ardrossan mainline station / ferry terminal. Ferry one takes you from the mainland to Arran where you have your first ride of the day. The ride will only take 19 miles but with a tough climb to contend with as you climb alongside Goat Fell. Sweeping down the descent into Lochranza, you will see the castle and ferry terminal ahead.

The second ferry takes you across Kilbarchan Sound to Claonaig where time permitting, you can make a short visit to Skipness Kirk and Castle. The second ride to the third ferry is a short undulating ride on a quiet country road only six miles but with some killer views. Your final ferry takes you from Kennacraig to Islay. The final bike ride depends on the choice of location.

Day 2: Islay to Jura

This will be your first day on Islay. The days on Islay are interchangeable and if you want free time, you can spend some time exploring the island and its many attractions on your own. The planned trip would be a short journey to the Jura ferry and spend time cycling on the island. The Paps of Jura and wildlife are well worth seeing, however, with only one road on the island, cycling is limited. There may only be one road but there is also a distillery which you can visit or perhaps just stop for lunch at Craighouse.

Day 3: Islay wildlife and distilleries

This will be your second day on Islay. This is a day to relax with a nice easy cycle on some of the island's almost deserted roads and perhaps a visit to a distillery. If wildlife watching is more up your street, there are seals at Portnahaven or take a ride up to the RSPB reserve at Loch Gruinart.

Day 4: Homeward bound

Today, you will have an early start. Scottish Bike Touring's tours are all tackled at an easy pace, however, there are times due to ferry schedules that an early rise and a sense of urgency might be required. Depending on your choice of accommodation, this is one of those times as you retrace Friday's steps to Arran. On Arran, you might be able to take a different route to the ferry but there will still be quite a stiff climb involved. This tour ends in Ardrossan.

Notes: This tour is a level 1 / 2 ride for hybrids or tourers with a short mileage.
