Think of this bike tour as rolling theaters of wine country life that change with the seasons, rather than set point-to-point trips. Sonoma on a Bike offers a hands-on opportunity to discover all the hidden adventures, wine tastings at family-owned wineries, gourmet treats (think regionally inspired, the locally grown cuisine at Michelin restaurants), and unique events that Sonoma County has to offer, on a bike, all of that with none of the hassles!
You will be accommodated at Hotel Healdsburg, Bodega Bay Lodge, and MacArthur Place Hotel and Spa.
The hotel is located just 67 miles north of San Francisco but worlds away from the stress of the city. Hotel Healdsburg captures the simplicity, quiet sophistication, and charm of Sonoma wine country while offering you a beautifully appointed room with plush down comforter, feather bed, and Frette linens. A pampering spa is also close at hand, so you can properly steep yourself in well-deserved luxury.
Welcome to the quintessential California coastal retreat. Your room will have a private balcony, cozy down comforter, and real wood-burning fireplace. Should you feel the urge to wander, you’ll discover a full-service spa and seven acres of landscaped grounds with sweeping views of Bodega Bay and the ocean. You can take all that in at your leisure and relax in the ocean-view heated pool or whirlpool spa.
What better place to end your visit than a stay at an inn originally built as a prestigious vineyard and working ranch with prized trotters. This beautiful 19th-century estate turned inn now houses sumptuous guest rooms, spectacular sculpture gardens, tranquil walkways, and a spa that offers over 40 different treatments using flowers, herbs, and plants found in the garden.
You can expect an amazing itinerary of experiences while biking the region’s beautiful country roads. You might find yourself face-to-face with a herd of goats, while sampling the artisan cheese maker’s wares, or enjoying an elegant lunch with world-class wines, created by the chef at a hidden estate. Depending on the season, you might picnic under 1400-year-old redwoods, or experience a crab fishing expedition up close and personally.
However, it isn’t a tour for everyone. In fact, Sonoma on a Bike has limited seats. It’s designed for those who like to savor a bike tour with all their senses fully engaged. They encourage you to take the time to come and breathe, and take in the beauty you’ve found in the lush landscapes of Sonoma County, with its vineyards, valleys, vistas, hills, mountains, parks, rocky coastline, crashing waves, farmland, and forests (including those majestic and magnificent redwoods). It’s a slow, sensual trip. And if that sounds somewhat provocative, and possibly a little self-indulgent, so be it. It’s a gift to be given, and shared, with someone you love - including yourself. So come to discover all this and more, as you journey through Sonoma County’s beautiful appellations.
The classic tour offers biking routes that are rated “moderate”, and vary in length each day from 20 to 40 miles of surfaced roads. You’ll be cycling over rolling hills to flat, coastline roads, but Sonoma on a Bike can also offer more challenging routes for those who ask. They have another option up the sleeves, a van will carry your prized purchases, bottles of that incredible wine you just tasted or, should you want it, you're up to the next hill!
What better way to begin your trip than by biking through a few of the most celebrated vineyards in Northern California? You’ll stop for a few wine tastings so you can judge for yourself which you like the best. Later that day, you will be introduced to a town voted by Fodor’s as “one of the 10 best small towns in America”.
This day you experience, first hand, the world-acclaimed wine growing appellations that are part of the Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. You’ll get a taste (or two) of why these areas are famous for such amazing, award-winning wines. Of course, there’s also time to visit some hidden treasures along the way.
You follow the Russian River to a magnificent forest of 1,400-year-old coastal redwoods. After lunch, you’ll head to the coast, home of fiercely independent and hardworking fishermen and totally relaxed sea lions, both of whom are experts at catching the region’s succulent salmon, oysters, abalone, and Dungeness crab. Of course, world-class wines tasting experience will make sure you get your share of that bounty, too.
Biking through the historic and charming town of Bodega - also the home of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” - you continue onward to visit destinations that are beloved by those in the know. The rewards may be fresh hot cinnamon bread straight from wood-fired brick ovens, a cheese artisan and his goats, a fantasy street peopled by the creations of one gifted artist or have a chance to discover the Barlow, home to food producers, winemakers, brewers, distillers, and artists.
Sonoma on a Bike recommends a quick, lightweight, road bike traversing Sonoma County roads and they have a new fleet of Specialized Allez Comps and Sirrus Elites just for that purpose. In addition, they’ll outfit you with protective helmets, water bottles, and handlebar bags to keep your personal necessities at your fingertips.
The trips are entirely organized and operated by Sonoma County cyclists, foodies, and wine aficionados who are passionate about this particular spot of paradise that they call home. In fact, every trip will be led by Randy and his most experienced guides. You can expect local wines to be served each night with your dinner.
Randy Johnson is the CEO of Getaway Adventures and has been a bike aficionado and passionate explorer of Sonoma County for over two decades. He has a well-earned reputation for nosing out those quirky, fascinating and completely one-of-a-kind experiences that only the locals may know about. He also likes nothing better than celebrating his discoveries with other adventurous spirits.
