Daily itinerary

Day 1: Petchaburi to Hua Hin

You will meet at a Bangkok Hotel before you get transferred to the start of your ride in Petchaburi (approximately 2 hours). This ride is a gentle start to the trip as you head out of Petchaburi and into rural Thailand, along roads flanked by paddy fields and palm trees. You will then ride along the beach into Cha-am and on to the beach resort town of Hua Hin.

The town is closely tied to Thai royalty. The last 20 kilometers is on a main road, but there is a wide shoulder to ride. If the traffic proves to be too heavy, this section can be transferred. You will top off your day with a seafood dinner on a pier in the center of town.

  • Accommodation: Putahracsa Resort
  • Meals included: Lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 67 kilometers / 41 miles (+194 meters / -194 meters)

Day 2: Hua Hin to Prachuap Khiri Khan

You will head out of Hua Hin, towards Sam Roi Yot (300 Hundred Peaks) National Park. This park has spectacular limestone formations and freshwater marshes in between the peaks. You will ride on quiet backroads along beaches with striking limestone peaks as the background.

After the park, you will have a short ride on the main road, and about 20 kilometers, before heading back to the coast, you will pass by many small villages. The final section is along the beach to Prachuap Khiri Khan. The selected hotel has some great views and, as the town is well known for having some the finest seafood in Thailand, you will feast on the local specialties at dinner.

  • Accommodation: Hadthong Hotel
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 116 kilometers / 72 miles (+486m / -481m)

Day 3: Prachuap Khiri Khan to Ban Krut

You will leave the hotel and ride along the beachfront road for about 12 kilometers before hitting the main road. This section is 45 kilometers with the option to transfer. You are now well away from the main tourist areas, and the roads are quiet and in good condition. You will head towards a serene beach and the nature-friendly boutique resort. There will be time to relax in a hammock and listen to the surf.

  • Accommodation: Baan Grood Arcadia Hotel
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 78 kilometers / 48 miles (+300 meters / -301 meters)

Day 4: Ban Krut

This day will be a rest day that you have earned. You can spend it relaxing at the beach, wandering around the fishing village of Ban Krut, or taking a dip in one of the two salt water pools at the resort.

  • Accommodation: Baan Grood Arcadia Hotel
  • Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: Ban Krut to Chumpon

With legs rested, it is time to do some serious kilometers. You will ride 118 kilometers on quiet side roads with very little traffic. The route sticks to the coast, giving you enough views of the sea to the left and rugged mountains on your right.

You will be passing through Thailand’s narrowest part as the border with Burma is less than 20 kilometers away at some points. You will end the ride just north of Chumpon, at another secluded and quiet beach.

  • Accommodation: Nana Beach Resort
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 118 kilometers / 73 miles (+693 meters / -693 meters)

Day 6: Chumpon to Ranong

You will cross the Isthmus of Kra, which separates the Gulf of Thailand from the Adaman Sea and is just 44 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. You will head west for about 60 kilometers on an undulating road that cuts through the lush jungle-clad mountains that surround this area.

The hills and the twists and turns in the road make for some varied riding. There is a climb of about 3 kilometers starting at the Pun Ya Ban Waterfall, and then it is downhill and flat all the way to Ranong. This is a spa town, and the hotel has a hot mineral spring pool to soothe those aching muscles.

  • Accommodation: Tinidee Hotel
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 139 kilometers / 86 miles (+1407 meters / -1397 meters)

Day 7: Ranong to Khuraburi

You will ride through valleys on this day, so the road will be rolling, but there are no extreme climbs, just enough ascents and descents to make the ride interesting. You will pass by many villages and children waving and yelling out “farang, farang (foreigner)”. After some great views, the ride ends in a lovely little resort nestled in a valley and surrounded by lush tropical rain forest.

  • Accommodation: Kuraburi Greenview Resort
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 125 kilometers / 77 miles (+1052 meters / -981 meters)

Day 8: Khuraburi to Khao Lak

You will continue your journey south, riding from valley to valley towards picturesque Khao Lak. The road flattens out a bit as you reach Takua Pa, a former Portuguese settlement. The region was an important tin-dredging center in the first half of the 20th century, but there remains little evidence of the mining as rubber plantations have covered the dredged land.

You will next ride through one of the areas worst devastated by the 2004 Tsunami, and you will be amazed to see how quickly this area has bounced back and been rebuilt. You will arrive early to the hotel, so you can spend time in the amazing pool in the afternoon.

  • Accommodation: The Haven Khao Lak Hotel
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 79 kilometers / 49 miles (+509 meters / -580 meters)

Day 9: Khao Lak to Phuket

The last leg of the tour is to the tropical paradise of Phuket, the largest island, as well as a province of Thailand. There are a couple of small hills to conquer before you leave Khao Lak, but then it is flat all the way down to Phang Nga and Phuket.

This road is in excellent condition, and you will make good time towards the resort on Nai Yang Beach. Phuket is connected by a bridge to the mainland, and you will stop for a celebratory picture before riding on to your hotel.

  • Accommodation: Nai Yang Beach Resort
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ride: 118 kilometers / 73 miles (+654 meters / -655 meters)

Day 10: Departure

This day is yours to relax and rest after eight days of great riding. SpiceRoads Cycling can help with arrangements if you would like to extend your stay at Phuket or organize transfers to the airport for onward flights.

  • Meals included: Breakfast

Bike information

Because some people cannot imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, SpiceRoads Cycling do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section. The bikes are Trek 2.1 C, Domane 2.0, and carbon Émonda S5 road bikes, with Shimano components and seat posts.

If you have your own saddle that you are comfortable with, you are welcome to bring it, and SpiceRoads Cycling will fit it. They can provide strap-style toe cages if requested, but you might like to consider bringing SPD clip pedals if you use them, and please make sure to bring your shoes and cleats. If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a road bike in good mechanical order.

Bike repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though SpiceRoads Cycling cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube, and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all biking adventures and is non-negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet, you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree, you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is nine people or more, SpiceRoads Cycling will add another guide to the tour. All guides are well-informed in the history, culture, and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en-route.

This cycling holiday will be held in Thailand. It will cover places including Bangkok, Petchaburi, Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ban Krut, Chumpon, Ranong, Khuraburi, Khao Lak, and Phuket.
